Want a quick Ultimate Frisbee PE drill that instantly improves cutting, separation, and in-bounds catches? Receive Inside the Box is a high-rep 1v1 activity where the attacker must get open and catch cleanly inside a coned box without stepping on the lines. It is perfect for middle school and high school PE (grades 6–12), works as a station, and is easy to assess.

Grade Level & Standards

Grades: 6–12 (Middle School / High School)
Skill Focus: Cutting, body control, catching in-bounds, defending space
SHAPE America:

  • S1: Catching, cutting, change of direction

  • S2: Spacing, timing, creating separation

  • S4: Respectful competition, self-control (non-contact defense)

Learning Target (I can…)

  • Create separation from a defender using a change of speed and direction.

  • Catch under control and land both feet in-bounds.

  • Stay balanced and avoid stepping on boundary lines.

How to Play (Rules)

The passer feeds throws from outside the box. The attacker must create space and catch inside the box.

Most Important Rules

    • Both feet must land inside the box on the catch.

    • Line = out. If the attacker steps on or outside the line, it does not count.

    • Drop or tip-to-self = turnover/reset.

    • Defense is active but non-contact (no reaching through arms, no bumping).

Coaching Cues (simple and effective)

For the attacker

  • “Sell one way, explode the other.”

  • “Hard plant, fast first step.”

  • “Show hands early.”

  • “Catch, then stick the landing.” (quiet feet, balance)

For the defender

  • “Stay low, mirror hips.”

  • “Take away the easy space.”

  • “Hands up without contact.”

Common Errors & Fixes

Error: Attacker drifts onto the line
✅ Fix: Tell them “aim for the middle,” not the edge. Start with a bigger box.

Error: Attacker turns back too early (no separation)
✅ Fix: Require a change of speed: jog → sprint on the final cut.

Error: Defender gets too physical
✅ Fix: Add a rule: “No body contact = automatic point for attacker.”

Differentiation (make it inclusive)

Easier

  • Larger box (4×4 m or bigger).

  • Defender plays “shadow defense” (close but no blocks).

  • Passer throws only chest-high.

Harder

  • Smaller box (2.5×2.5 m).

  • Add a stall window: attacker has 5 seconds to get free.

  • Defender can attempt a block, still no contact.

FAQ

Is this good for middle school beginners?
Yes. Start with a larger box and make defense non-contact shadowing.

What size should the box be?
Start 4×4 m for beginners, then shrink to 3×3 m or smaller for challenge.

Can I run this with a whole class?
Yes. Create multiple boxes (stations) and rotate every 30–45 seconds.
