Looking for a high-energy Ultimate Frisbee PE game that gets every student involved, forces smart decisions, and builds defensive urgency? Battle Royale (Gates) is a fast-paced elimination-style game where each team defends a small goal while attacking any other gate. It is perfect for middle school and high school PE (grades 6–12) and works great as a main activity or end-of-class game.

How to Play (Rules)

This is Ultimate with a survival twist.

Movement Rules (Ultimate basics)

  • No running with the disc (pivot only).

  • Normal Ultimate passing and cutting rules apply.

  • Turnovers happen on drops, interceptions, or out of bounds.

Scoring

A team scores by completing a pass through another team’s gate (between the two cones).

Elimination

  • If a team is scored on at their gate, they are eliminated (or sit out one round—your choice).

Reset

After every score:

  • Option A: Quick reset from the scorer’s location

  • Option B: Reset at center
Pick one and keep it consistent.

Common Errors & Fixes

Problem: Teams leave their gate completely and get eliminated instantly
✅ Fix: Require one defender stays within 2–3 steps of the gate at all times.

Problem: The game becomes chaotic with too many long throws
✅ Fix: Add a rule: must complete 2 passes before scoring at a gate.

Problem: Eliminated teams disengage
✅ Fix: Use respawn rules (see variations) so everyone stays active.

Differentiation (make it inclusive)

Easier

  • Larger gates (wider cone spacing).

  • Require defense to stay one arm’s length away (no tight marking).

  • Use a “safe zone” where beginners can reset with no defensive pressure.

Harder

  • Smaller gates (narrow spacing).

  • Add a stall count (5–7 seconds).

  • Limit throws for a round (forehand only / backhand only).

  • Add 2 discs for advanced classes (more scanning, more teamwork).

FAQ

Is this good for middle school?
Yes. Use larger gates, respawns, and a short stall count for structure.

How many gates do I need?
Six is ideal, but you can do 4–8 gates depending on space and class size.

What team size works best?
2 per gate is perfect. If you have more students, run 3 per gate or add more gates.

What if students get eliminated too quickly?
Use the sit-out-one-round rule or a timed respawn.
